Forest Cookout
Summary
Roam around in the bronzed forest surrounding your cozy cabin and gather nature's gifts, like chestnuts, autumn berries, and pumpkins!
Return home, throw them in the kitchen pot, and see what tasty treats come out! There are more than 50 recipes to discover!
Have to stop playing? Don't worry, as the forest will be there, waiting for you when you come back, and you can continue where you left off!
This game was lovingly made for Bitbrain's Leafyjam 2024.
For the best experience, download the Windows or Linux versions, instead of playing the web version.
Controls
- "W", "A", "S", "D" or the arrow keys to move around.
- "E" to interact.
- "Esc" or "Tab" to close the menu screens or to quit the game .
- Use the mouse in the food cooking menus.

Troubleshooting
If you have an older computer that doesn't support the Vulkan graphics API which the game uses by default, try running it in OpenGL mode with
forest-cookout.exe --rendering-driver opengl3

The calm music and rustling of dry leaves makes this a wonderful experience.
I love how this feels on my ultrawide screen, like a calm walk in the forest. The falling leaves are beautifil, as ate the swaying trees.
And then there's 66 recipes to cook? Oh my! The cooking discovery game is a very nice finale and had me want to go out again.
Sadly, the HTML5 version hangs my browser, Chrome Version 130.0.6723.117 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Yeah, I’ve noticed as well, that the web build runs somewhat decently only on my linux setup. My best guess is that the leaf particles are killing the performance, and if we continue building the game, we might just disable them for the web, even if that would partially kill the vibe 😅
To be honest I think it might just be the world generation or something. The native build also has an intense hang at the start. :)

Yeah, not much effort in optimization was mde in that regard, it just loads everything at once, so you are definitely correct.
